Arwyddion o helynt

Signs certainly have their place - but the mountains of Wales are no place for these urban features.

A recent website posting, now happily removed, stated that the Society was supporting moves to install signage at the junction of the PYG and Crib Goch paths on Snowdon at Bwlch Moch. This is not the case. There is already signage on the Bwlch Moch stiles indicating the PYG (blue sign) and Crib Goch (red) routes. This is sufficient.

The Society fully supports good quality interpretation and information signage at key entry points to the hills, such as Pen Y Pass and Ogwen Cottage, but does not support the installation of urban street furniture including signage in wild places.

We advise all people venturing into the hills, even on popular mountains such as Snowdon, to carry a map and compass and to be familiar with the basic use of them. If in doubt go with someone more experienced. Society officers are not convinced that signage high in the hills will improve safety and may even lead to a false sense of security. Continental approaches are different and we have no wish to see paths being painted or Swiss-style signs being put up in our hills.
